Brow Lift Surgery

A brow lift can dramatically improve the appearance of your face and make you look younger. It can reduce sagging, drooping, or hanging eyebrows and it can also smooth forehead wrinkles and frown lines. A brow lift is a surgical procedure that can be performed in a surgeon’s office, in a hospital, or at an outpatient surgery facility. Most people choose to receive a brow lift under local anesthesia, although patients may also be able to receive general anesthesia if they prefer.

In order to determine whether a brow lift is right for you, you will need to schedule a consultation with a plastic surgeon. During this meeting, the surgeon will review your medical history and perform a physical exam of your face. He or she will also take pictures for your records. During the consultation, you will be asked about your goals for treatment and what you dislike about your face shape. You will also be able to see before and after photos of previous brow lift patients so you can better understand the potential results.

Before the brow lift is done, the surgeon will apply anesthesia to ensure your comfort. You will receive either local anesthesia or, if you are having the procedure under general anesthesia, you will be put to sleep for the duration of the operation.

Once you are under, the surgeon will use a small incision to gain access to the muscles and tissues underneath the skin of your forehead. He or she will then adjust these structures and remove any excess fat if necessary. Once the underlying tissue and muscles are in the proper position, the brow will be elevated and secured with sutures or another fixation device. The incisions will then be closed with stitches or staples, and the area will be cleansed and bandaged.

After the brow lift is complete, you will need to follow your surgeon’s instructions for recovery. Some of the most important things to remember are to avoid strenuous activity or any activities that could cause bleeding for a few days after the procedure, and to keep the bandages and stitches clean. It is also helpful to have someone drive you home after the brow lift, and to stay with you for the first night or two if possible.

Brow lifts are considered safe when they are performed by an experienced surgeon, but complications can occur. The most common side effects include redness and irritation in the treated area, which should subside within a day or so. In rare cases, nerves may be injured along or near the incision site, which can lead to a loss of sensation in the eyebrows or forehead area.

Because a brow lift is a cosmetic procedure, health insurance will not normally pay for it. However, it is possible to get a brow lift with the CareCredit® credit card, which offers special financing options for healthcare expenses not covered by insurance.** Use our Acceptance Locator to find a doctor or cosmetic surgeon who accepts CareCredit®.
